New South Wales have claimed more than half of the spots in the extended 2018 Australian Schoolboys squad following a successful week-long Australian Schools Championship at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

A total of 23 players from the NSW I and II sides that played against each other on the final day of competition on Saturday 14 July, a match that saw NSW I take out the silverware 29-19 over their fellow Statesmen.

Over 65 NSW schoolboys participated in the Division One competition, a vast number of which represented the fifth-seeded Combined States side.

Said NSW Waratahs Elite Youth Manager, Pat McCutcheon: “To see NSW I and II in the finals, with NSW II knocking off QLD I in a classic interstate clash, it’s fantastic to see the week of tough competition end with that result. I’m incredibly proud of the efforts of our aspiring New South Wales players.

“A lot of thanks has to go to the countless hours and efforts put in by the various Schools Sporting Associations and their volunteers to achieve this outcome.”

Australia Schools Head Coach Andrew Moloney said: “It’s been a really good week. We’ve been really impressed with the attacking mindset of everyone and were saw some fantastic tries throughout the championship.

“The big thing for us was the physicality particularly in the contact areas. That was a fantastic final and the physicality was great.

“The attitude of the boys really stood up on the last day; we’re very excited about the squad we have.

“The Tri Nations Series is something we are really looking forward to. It’s a great tournament to play in and we’re really excited by that.”
