Warringah prop signs with NSW Waratahs

The NSW Waratahs have added to their front row stocks by securing the signature of young Warringah prop Rory O’Connor until 2020.

24-year-old O’Connor was a standout for his club in this year’s Shute Shield and no stranger to the NSW Waratahs environment.

Earlier this year he was part of the squad for the pre-season match against the Highlanders in Queenstown.

O’Connor, who is studying civil engineering at Sydney University, said this was amazing opportunity for him to test himself on the international stage.

“I’ve come through NSW club rugby and it’s humbling to now officially be part of the Super Rugby team. I have a lot to learn and the prospect of playing alongside some seasoned Wallabies will really help my game,” O’Connor said.

“A lot of club rugby players are very committed to making it professionally in Australia which is shown through the strength of the Shute Shield. Although club rugby isn’t as elite as Super Rugby, the levels are united by a love of the game and commitment to Australian rugby,” he said.

NSW Waratahs Assistant Coach (Forwards), Simon Cron said O’Connor has a lot of offer.

“Rory has had a very strong Shute Shield and has been playing at loosehead prop for a number of years,” Cron said.
“He has an extremely professional approach to everything he does. His work ethic around the park separates him from other props and we look forward to getting him into the NSW Waratahs environment and helping him to achieve his goals in Super Rugby.”

O’Connor has been named in the starting line-up for Sydney’s NRC match against Brisbane City at Woollahra Oval today.
