SEVENS ACTION HITS FORSTER

12/10/2018

Sevens fever hits the NSW Mid North Coast this weekend when the Forster-Tuncurry Club hosts the State championships.

It’s a massive boost for the game in NSW and that region with 82 teams from across the State taking part, with a record number of 41 girls’ teams and the same number of boys’ teams taking part in the Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s age groups.

In all, 215 games will be played on three fields over three days from Friday 12 October to Sunday.

Tournament Director Michael Doyle said this is a significant occasion on the NSW rugby calendar.

“This area is a big growth region for NSW Rugby and it’s an area that hasn’t really had a lot of rugby. For an event like this to take place in Forster, it’s absolutely huge, especially to help the area develop their local competitions, it’s fantastic promotion for the region,” Doyle said.

It is also the first time an equal number of girls’ and boys’ teams have been registered for the event.

“The girls’ division has grown from initially only an Under 17s age group to now include the Under 15s and Under 13s. This is the most girls we’ve ever had at the Championships,” Doyle said.

Teams will be traveling from rural and metropolitan regions, including teams that are playing for the first time.

“It’s very exciting because we have some teams that have played rugby and some teams that have never played. So not only is it a great introduction to rugby union for these young players, it’s really a way to spread the word of Rugby Sevens around the state of NSW, and to have an event that underlines what the spirit of the game is all about, enjoyment and participation,” Doyle added.

Sixteen aspiring referees will also be part of the action this weekend.

“This is a really good event for our referees as well. They’ll have a go at Sevens and we’ll also have our referee coaches who will be looking at those referees who have the potential to further their careers in the Sevens pathway,” said Doyle, who is also NSW Rugby’s Senior Manager of Match Officials.

The action starts at 0830 on all three days.
