Chancellor and Hewson take out Super W awards

Experienced fullback, Ash Hewson and Emily Chancellor have been awarded Best Back and Best Forward in another unbeaten season for Matt Evrard’s Super W side.

Awarded Best Back, Hewson adds the accolade to a string of individual honours.

“She adds an overall calmness to the group, on field and when you are backed into difficult game situations, she seems to always find a way out of it and that comes with a lot of experience,” Evrard said.

“The amount of learning so many are getting playing around her is great and it’s not just the on field stuff, it’s the standards we set as a playing group off the field that she leads and drives more than most.

“All the girls look up to her, she has got every skill you could need with her passing game or her choice of speed, her kicking game, her reading of the game her comms on field, she has got all of that.”

Evrard was full of praise for Chancellors ‘team first’ approach in 2019, with the dynamic loose forward playing an unfamiliar role.

“She had to play a position within the structure we play that does not suit the way she has played normally, so that challenged her big time and the players and staff recognise how hard she worked,” Evrard said.

“There was never a negative word that come out of her mouth, the fact that she was playing in a position that at times she wouldn’t have even wanted to play, you wouldn’t have even noticed that.

“The way in which she took the opportunity to learn more, adapt her game and find the opportunities that speaks volumes in how she is as an athlete.

He praised Chancellor’s drive and ability after missing the 2018 Super W season through injury.

“She is one of these rare players that you can 100% call an athlete,” said Evrard.

“Em is someone that you trust the recovery will be done right because when no one is watching she will be doing it.

“She is that sort of player and takes a lot of pride in her own performance, but takes just as much in what she does away from the field.”
