Trytons Rugby gets the thumbs up

Trytons Rugby is a highlight to Adam Capps’ week.

Every Saturday during the season, 16-year-old Adam and his Trytons mates gather at Nagle Park in Maroubra for skills training and a game of rugby.

“There’s always great excitement at home from Adam getting ready,” his father Nigel said.

“He organises his Trytons’ gear the night before.”

After a few high-fives from the trainers and team-mates, a warm-up run and skills training, it’s time to break into teams.

“This gives Adam the opportunity to put into play what he has learned during skills.

“The trainers are terrific as they support the players with on field positions.”

The Trytons Rugby program is giving young people living with a disability an opportunity to participate in rugby union. The modified program focuses on skills, coordination, fitness and teamwork and is supported by Sydney Juniors and NSW Rugby.

The Trytons recently celebrated their season end with special guest TahMan who presented participants with their medals.

An original Tryton, Adam has been participating in the program for seven years. The year 10 student lives with down syndrome and participates because ‘it’s fun’.

“It taught me to play the game and to be tough,” Adam said.

His parents, Nigel and Divna said Trytons make their family feel included and involved in the community.

“The Trytons have given Adam an opportunity to participate in a team sport on a Saturday just like so many of his friends, family and neighbours,” Nigel said.

“The simple achievements of our kids are often a huge milestone,” he said.

They’ve also noticed a change in his confidence and would encourage other parents to give the program a go.

“It’s safe, non-judgemental and the children have an opportunity to meet new friends while the parents can ‘have a chat’.

“The Trytons volunteers are enthusiastic, caring and focus on ability. It’s a great way for the kids to release some energy too,” Nigel said.

Maroubra is one of two locations to host Trytons with a Sunday program offered at Koola Park at Lindfield.
