He was flagged as one of “Dubbo’s brightest young rugby prospects”, and in 2016, NSW Waratahs debutant prop more than lived up to that billing. One of ten players to make his debut for the Waratahs in 2016, it became a fairytale breakout year for the young prop with a call up to the Wallabies squad. His Test debut came soon after in the Wallabies’ match against Argentina in Perth, his form earning him a total of seven Test appearances for his country in 2016, including one Bledisloe and Spring Tour matches. Robertson managed to juggle his fast-tracked rugby career whilst studying a full-time medical degree at Sydney University after completing his Bachelor of Medical Science (majoring in Physiology and Pharmacology) in 2015.
